WhatsApp Group Chat: Etiquette 101

WhatsApp Group Chat

I have a love-hate relationship with the different WhatsApp Group Chats that I am part of in my WhatsApp world.

When our Telkom line has been down and with it my link to the outside world, I’ve been on edge … no really it’s all I can get on my mobile. I mean what else do we use our phones for? Calls? Pfft!

I really have a love hate relationship with all the different chat groups I am part of. Whilst these groups can be a pain I find most of them entertaining. However I also find myself wondering how some people managed to get as far as they have in life. Seriously!

The Types Of People You Find In A WhatsApp Group Chat!

In these groups we find people who believe they can say what they want, when they want and how they want. This can lead to issues if you think how everyone’s sense of humour differs and where words and sentences are read in a different tones. The hubster has decided enough was enough, the rants in our neighbourhood chat group were just too much, he was out.

What Do We Need from these chats?

Referring to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, the need for security, acceptance and love all fall under these WhatsApp groups albeit in varying degrees.

Here is my need or expectation when it comes to WhatsApp Group Chat etiquette:

  1. One does not simply leave a WhatsApp group.
  2. Just say goodbye and try not to rage and leave. I have seen this done many times and by grown-ups, not even children! So I’m referring to anyone over 25 really.
  3. Make sure you know the groups rules and what the group is for i.e. safety, neighbourhood, friendship etc.
  4. Do not assume everyone thinks the same as you, has the same beliefs or follows the same religion.
  5. We can at this point all assume that Jacob Zuma and Donald Trump can be made fun of, but try keep all other politics to a minimum people.
  6. When posting pics try keep those sexy ones to yourself! And if it’s a whole bunch of pics, rather go ahead and post them directly to Facebook.
  7. Respect the admin. This role comes with great responsibility.
  8. Love them or hate them (the Admin of the WhatsApp group that is) accept that there is a role for them in a lot of instances.
  9. Don’t post anything you wouldn’t say to the person, hiding behind your phone makes you a big bully. If you are angry, rather step away from the phone and breathe. Maybe try your hand at yoga or breakdancing. Then wait 10 minutes before replying.
  10. Keep it positive! There is just too much negativity in the world.

If you are not sure then refer to the T.H.I.N.K principal. This is one that I am trying to instil in my own family, whether it is in person or online. Give it a try.

T- is it True
H- is it Helpful
I – is it Inspiring
N- is it Necessary
K- is it Kind

Back from #lekkerlinky – I’m very bad at leaving groups when people irritate me, without any warning or excuses or whatever, I just leave! lol

I cannot bring myself to doing it. I can think of maybe three times ever I left a group because I was not impressed.

Very true! All the rules – especially no 1. Some (family) groups you can’t leave… Some friends’ ones you don’t want to leave. 🙂 #Lekkerlinky

Totally agree and enough with the Good Morning Picture messages and videos! Just say the words or use the waving hand or the numerous animated GIFs. I found the study groups from Unisa to be most interesting too

Hehehe that could definitely be interesting I am sure (depends on what subject is being discussed on the study group :))

Argh! I’m so iffy about WhatsApp groups and keep it down to an absolute minimum – the necessities like the class group. I also exit swiftly when it clogs me down with unecessary information that lacks relevance.

I totally agree, that is why when a group is created I would appreciate it if honesty was used in naming the group chat and the purpose thereof. The good thing is with the new year comes a clean up on ones phone.

Haha … I love this! I might share it on my complex’s “not for chit chat” group and see what kind of response I get. Lol
Although that is probably a violation of Rule No. 3 above! 😂😂
