Mother’s Day: A day to be recognised for ‘our’ awesomeness

Mother ‘verbto bring up a child with care and affection.

Mother’s Day ‘noun’ celebrated on the second Sunday in May. A day in which motherhood and the influences of mothers in society and families are celebrated. A day to celebrate with cards, flowers and gifts.

Mother’s DayT&T’ a day everyone lets mom know how much she is loved and appreciated, as she gathers her snot flickers to get in the car or starts prepping for lunch. She may have had breakfast in bed but needs to go clean the kitchen up.

Ideal world – enter mom: She is waking up after a good hearty night’s sleep. She bounces out of bed after a delicious breakfast that is her own and not just finishing up her kids leftovers (busted). The birds are singing and flying around her, the cute woodland animals are helping her get ready to face the day. She gets ready for the lunch she will be attending. She is singing and dancing along. Her kids aren’t saying mom don’t make that sound it hurts my ears and why are you walking funny? She steps into her car. Her husband, her kids and the car look impeccable. Bags packed, teeth brushed, her kids simply loving being siblings and their biggest gripe that they aren’t able to cheer and be supportive of each other enough.

Enter Tonic & Tiara’s world: While that would be the perfect little world, please remember I am a mom to two small snot flickers and life doesn’t play out like a Disney movie for me. We roll with a romantic horror remember?!

Some fun ideas to the hubster this Mother’s Day:

  1. Let me sleep, for when I wake I will move mountains with the sound of my voice or at least bring me a good hot beverage in bed. Heck McDonald’s delivers so I’m not fussed. Decorate with flowers or leaves from the garden.
  2. Let me watch a cheesy girly movie and pretend to enjoy it, not telling me every 10 minutes how beautiful and lovely the movie is.
  3. Be my slave for the day. Well more so today.
  4. Get the kids to make me copious amounts of homemade presents and cards. Don’t forget that grannies are also mommies and we need to spoil them too. That is where we cue Pinterest for fun gift ideas for mom and gran. Dads and everyone else take note.

Hubster and I have realised that staying home is way more fun than going out with toddlers but luckily the choices are growing in venues that have childminders or are child orientated. One of my memorable Mother’s Day’s was a picnic at our house though. We sat around, snacked and it was just bliss.

For a different type of picnic why not have a “nachos” themed afternoon (replace nachos with pitas or wraps). Melt cheese in the oven over the nachos. Everyone can dish up and make their own fun alternatives and they will find it delicious. Ideas for garnishes are not limited to your usuals. Prepped in little bowls – lettuce, tomato, sour cream, avocado, guacamole, salsa, cheese sauce, chilli con carne or stir fried chicken and peppers (options are endless). So fun, easy and effective.

If you want to take your picnic out, why not try Kaya FM’s Mother’s Day concert at the Pretoria Botanical Gardens. Alternatively, my wish list destination this Mother’s Day is The Winter Sculpture Fair happening from 13th -14th May, 2017 at the Nirox Foundation Sculpture Park, Komdraai Rd, Krugersdorp, Cradle of Humankind.

Another memorable Mother’s Day was a half day spa trip with my sister and mother-in-law. A great gift idea (hint, hint). A photo shoot voucher for the family is wonderful and the results – well that speaks for itself.

The hubster scale on this commercialised holiday: he is surprisingly sweet – a definite two thumbs up for gift buying for his mom but a big tongue out at going to a restaurant or venue (big surprise).

What do you consider a lovely way to spend Mother’s Day – the day my daughter cannot fathom why I get recognition for my awesomeness as her mom. Where is her day?

We are slightly spoiled for choice living in Dubai. Mother’s Day is almost forgotten here because which one do you celebrate? UK? UAE? SA? AUS? all on different days and months…this makes for the perfect excuse when husband forgets to do anything. Moving on from rant… Spa day sounds like heaven or maybe a small hotel room – alone, no kids, no husband, no dog…mmm sleep late, eat your own food, drink wine and go to the loo alone! Maybe we should start a small hotel….
